Oldest shelter for Native women
Tuesday, July 26th, 2005ia Marian’s Blog, we learn that the only two shelters for battered Native American women in Alaska are going to be shut down. Callers are now greeted with an answering machine message and are instructed to call the police. Which isn’t going to help much when you want to get out and need to do so safely.
The shelter, the first Native shelter in Alaska was funded by the state of Alaska and the Council on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault: but its grant has run out.
The Emmonak shelter is one of just two Native-run shelters in Alaska.
